Friend or Foe
by Michael Morpurgo

Adapted and Directed by Daniel Buckroyd
Designed by Keith Baker
Sound by Tom Lishman
Lighting Design by Mark Dymock

with Mathew Hamper, Janet Greaves, Michael Palmer, Chris Porter & Paul Sandys

From master storyteller Michael Morpurgo comes a thrilling tale of extraordinary friendship.

Set at the height of the Second World War, two boys, embark on a wondrous adventure deep in the Devonshire countryside.

Evacuated from London, war seemed far away from David and Tucky’s new lives in the country. Until one night, the skyline is lit up with gun flashes and the distant crump of bombing shatters their new found peace. And when a German bomber crashes, the boys feel they should hate the airmen inside. But one of them saves David’s life…

A modern day classic adored by children and grown ups alike!

Those Magnificent Men

New Perspectives & Scamp Theatre present

Those Magnificent Men
By Brian Mitchell & Joseph Nixon

Chocks Away! for the hilarious, heart-stopping story of Alcock and Brown and the first ever non-stop transatlantic flight.

By any standards, it’s a classic tale of plucky British pioneers – Captain John Alcock, dashing WW1 fighter pilot, and Lieutenant Arthur Whittam Brown, navigational genius with a gammy leg, huddled together against the elements in the tiny cockpit of their converted Vickers Vimy biplane, made almost entirely of wood and canvas – talk about winging it!

Now critically-acclaimed comedy writing duo, Brian Mitchell & Joseph Nixon, have turned the story of the race to conquer the skies over the Atlantic into a fast and furious comic tour-de-force. Thrill to the sheer adventuring spirit of our unlikely heroes, marvel at their daredevil aerial antics, and wonder at how the whole bally thing is told with just two actors and a crate full of funny props.

Reviews

‘Wonderfully entertaining – has the making of a West End hit’
The Times ****

‘Full of laughter, pathos and ingenuity – the production has a real feelgood-factor’
The Stage

‘A comic tour-de-force. Bravo! Highly recommended!’

The Virginia Monologues

Scamp Theatre presents

The Virginia Monologues : Why Growing old is Great

Written and performed by Virginia Ironside

Directed by Nigel Planer

When an agony aunt reaches sixty, she can lie like a trooper, jump off a bridge – or take to the stage.

Virginia Ironside explains that unlimited free drugs, fun funerals, grandchildren and sex – or, even better, no sex – make the sixties the best – and funniest – time of your life…

The Virginia Monologues premiered at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe to great acclaim and played limited season of UK sold out gigs in 2010.

Reviews

“Virginia’s become, effectively, a stand-up comedian. Her show is really funny…. I urge you to see it.”
Arthur Smith ‘Loose Ends’ BBC Radio 4

“This doyenne of Fleet Street delivers her observations with precision, style and wit. Her writing is beautiful, funny, sensible and smart – and her show, directed by The Young Ones’ Nigel Planer, is an absolute delight.”
Scotsman

“…a gentle, life-affirming ramble through the joys of being a sexagenarian – the bus passes, the bird-watching, the glamorous dressing gowns. That description, though, hardly does justice to the sharpness of the observation and writing here.

No stand-up show would be complete without a little sex, drugs and rock’n'roll and Ironside covers all of these with great gusto, from an ecstatic riff on the pleasures of pills, to intimate encounters with old men “with chests like rolled-up Austrian blinds” and reminiscences from her time as a rock columnist on The Daily Mail in the Sixties. She doesn’t shy away from death either in a beautifully judged segment towards the end.

This is a witty show for all ages, providing an oasis of grown-up calm and wisdom …”

Farm Boy – Michael Morpurgo

Adapted by Daniel Buckroyd

‘I hope you like my story – I wrote it for you just to show I could. It’s about the old tractor and it’s about Joey and it’s about me.’

It sometimes felt as though time had stood still down on the family farm – swallows nesting in the eaves, the old Fordson tractor quietly rusting at the back of the barn, Grandpa still tending his chickens – that is, until the summer his grandson finished school and came to stay, and the old man started telling stories of what it had been like on the farm when he was a boy.

Award-winning former Children’s Laureate Michael Morpurgo has written a compelling sequel to his much-loved novel, War Horse. It’s a moving account of the changing face of the English countryside and a beautifully-crafted reminder that stories really can reach out across the generations.

Now this magical tale of the bonds linking grandfather to grandson and ultimately both to the land has been brought to life by critically-acclaimed New Perspectives Theatre Company in a delightful new family show combining drama, storytelling and original music.

Director: Daniel Buckroyd
Composer: Matt Marks
Lighting Designer: Mark Dymock

Running Time: 65 mins (no interval)
Recommended Audience: Families & Children Aged 7+ Years

Critical Feedback to the 2009 tour of Farm Boy:

‘So powerful – John Walters gets right inside the dogged Grandfather’s skin – Matt Powell plays his Grandson with an openness, warmth and ingenuousness that disarms the children and endears them to his tale – moments of high drama – lots of comedy too – when the Fordson finally chugs into life, the children just can’t contain their joy.’
- THE STAGE

Claytime

Performed and Devised by Steve Tiplady and
Sally Brown.

Instruments made and performed by Giles Leaman.

Claytime, a play with clay, where the audience are invited to participate.

Indefinitearticles invite you to a place where the earth’s natural material meets with children’s imaginations: a world of fabulous forms, amazing animals and morphing monsters.

Each Claytime is totally unique – creating its own world, its own characters and its own stories drawn directly from its young audience. Truly, interactive theatre at its most engaging. This show is made with and for 3 to 6 year olds.

“This is a delightful show that engages the audience directly in its story telling and the use of clay. At the Mercury Theatre, parents and older children as well as the very young seized the chance to participate.”
Adrian Stokes, Associate Director, Mercury Theatre, Colchester

“Genius… a kind of theatrical sorcery. I’d be pleasantly surprised to come across a more original evening”
Time Out, Critic’s Choice

Baby Boomers

Baby Boomers

Directed by John Wright
Performed by Nick Ash and Becky Kitter

A stunning piece of physical theatre, BABY BOOMERS substitutes language for balloons, and blends mask, puppetry and extreme balloon modelling to tell stories of love, loss and regret. What do you do after a tragic event if you can get over it but your partner just can’t? Where can you go, what can you do? Acclaimed director, John Wright co-founder of Trestle and Told by an Idiot tells the heart warming story of a young couple from their first meeting and follows them through the life they make together. But a tragic loss is set to change their lives forever and force them to make a choice.

Running time 60 minutes

‘The moment the young girl finally meets her older self is chokingly poignant. What seems like a saddening comparison between someone in the prime of their youth with their older, less able self turns into a celebration of life and all that is possible for anyone of any age. The enduring power of being young at heart is then fully revealed through the final concluding image – one of the greatest balloon sculptures you’ll ever see’

Pinocchio

Geppetto uses the objects of a carpenter’s workshop to tell the tale of the puppet that wants to be a real boy, and the puppet-maker who wants to be a real father.

Puppetry, shadows, illusion and especially composed music combine to create a show with something for all ages; it’s inventive, visually and verbally witty with a big heart. Pinocchio is carved on stage, brushes become a fox and the shadow of two saws transforms into a giant shark. An element of improvisation makes each performance unique to its audience.

Award winning Indefinite Articles are at the forefront of the new wave of British puppetry and its members have worked with the RSC Improbable Theatre and the Mighty Boosh.

“Wonderful work that celebrates the possibilities of theatre”
Lyn Gardner, The Guardian
